What Information Is Needed Before Quoting an SMC Compression Mold?
A practical checklist covering the part, material, press, volume, surface, tolerance and validation information needed for an SMC mold quotation.

What Information Is Needed Before Quoting an SMC Compression Mold?
An SMC compression mold quotation should not be based on part size alone. Two parts with similar dimensions can require different mold structures, heating layouts, machining work, surface finishing, handling, and validation.
1. Product Drawing and 3D Data
Provide the latest 2D drawing and 3D model. Identify critical dimensions, assembly interfaces, surface requirements, and areas that still need design review.
2. SMC Material Information
Share the material grade, supplier data sheet, expected shrinkage, recommended molding temperature, and any experience with similar parts. Not all SMC grades flow and cure in the same way.
3. Compression Press Information
Important information includes platen dimensions, clamping force, stroke, daylight, heating method, connections, and loading method. The mold must match the actual production equipment.
4. Production Volume and Cycle Expectations
Expected annual volume influences mold material, wear considerations, maintenance planning, and automation requirements. Cycle targets must be discussed together with material, heating, press, loading, and post-molding operations.
5. Surface and Appearance Requirements
Define texture, polishing, coating, painting, bonding, or other downstream requirements. For appearance-sensitive surfaces, provide an approved sample or measurable standard.
6. Critical Dimensions and Assembly Information
Identify dimensions that affect sealing, mounting, joining, or final assembly. Large composite parts should also be reviewed for flatness and deformation.
7. Existing Production Problems
For a replacement tool, provide defect photos, process settings, measurements, and trial records. This helps separate product-design, material, mold, and process causes.
8. Validation and Delivery Scope
Confirm the trial material, trial press, sample quantity, dimensional report, fitting check, surface approval, fixtures, spare parts, packaging, and required documents.
